Engraving Process Help
Laser engraving uses focused laser energy to etch, mark, or remove the surface layer of compatible products. This guide explains text, artwork, file upload, and proof requirements for laser engraved items.
Laser engraving is not full-color printing. Artwork for laser engraving should usually be pure black and white with no shading or grayscale.
We offer many laser engravable products. Our CO2 laser equipment is used to etch or cut the surface of compatible materials.
Our laser engravers do not cut metal, but we do engrave wood, glass, acrylics, coated materials, and other compatible products. In many cases, engraving removes the surface color to reveal a contrasting color underneath.
Enter text exactly as you want it engraved. If you enter ALL CAPS, the finished product will be engraved in ALL CAPS.
We will center your text unless you specify otherwise. If you use a small amount of text, we will usually enlarge it and fit it appropriately into the available space.
Our engravers work with most fonts. Some products, such as laser engraved medallions, use Arial Bold by default. You may request a specific font or describe a font style in the special instructions. If we do not have the font, we may ask you to upload the font file.
Many laser engraved products allow artwork or logos. Trademarked or copyrighted images cannot be used without permission from the owner.
Laser engravers interpret artwork differently than printers. Because engraving intensity can vary based on the colors in an image, we usually require a pure black and white image.
In rare cases, color images or shading may be usable, but not every product is suitable for that approach. Please include positioning notes or special requests in the special instructions.
Ideal laser artwork is black and white with no shading or grayscale. Images should be high resolution.
Images from websites or social media are often reduced in quality and may not be suitable for laser engraving.
Accepted image file types include jpg, jpeg, pdf, png, bmp, ai, eps, psd, tiff, ttf, and cdr. We cannot accept images embedded inside a Word document.
Accepted upload types include text files such as .doc, .docx, .pdf, and .txt; image files such as .jpg, .jpeg, .png, .bmp, .ai, .eps, .psd, .tiff, and .cdr; and font files such as .ttf.
You may upload multiple files, but please keep all text information in one file when possible. If you have multiple products, group them clearly in the file.
The upload link will not appear until the order is completed and paid. After payment, the upload link will appear on the receipt / thank-you page.
Many laser engravable products allow you to request a proof. If this is your first order for the item, we recommend requesting one.
A proof lets you review the layout, font, and positioning before production. Proofs can delay production because we must wait for your approval or change request.
For repeat orders using the same design, a proof is usually not needed. Let us know you want the same design as a previous order.
Black and white artwork with clean edges works best for laser engraving.
